Here is another short bulletin from the City Jail of Denton , Ohio. This young man was arrested for  criminal trespass , graffiti pecuniary loss-$500 and (shock horror ) riding a bike on the footpath (fine $215 ) , at least that’s what it says on the  Denton Police Department website. His name is Timothy. A few days ago he was a nobody and now he’s famous. Oh yes you had ‘better keep out of Denton it’s obviously a dangerous place to live. I suppose that this kids family must be mortified. All the neighbours have probably told thier kids to keep away from him. He’s on the slippery slope ….next step San Quintin….I wonder if he has a blog , if so he has something to blog about now. A BAD BOY and hardly out of nappies. In the old days he might have gotten a smack on the back of the head and be told to ‘cop on’ and grow up. A frustrated artist perhaps. Personally I blame the parents.

If you had met this man/boy a few months ago and told him that he would soon be famous in his home town and   feature in an Irish blog he would have thought you were mad. -you never quite know what’s around the next corner. I wonder did they impound his bike ? He won’t be in a hurry to scribble on walls again that’s for sure. But it does seem a bit extreme of the Denton police to put him up on their site. I would hate to think what they do to really bad boys…..

Frank Dunlop has been sentenced to two years in jail. The sentence was just and appropriate. There will be an appeal and no doubt the mans health will be made an issue. Dunlop , like anyone else is entitled to a duty of care by the prison authorities and the state. The fact that we may not like him and that others have been denied that same duty of care does not mitigated that duty in any way. Many find the man arrogant and off- putting but that’s even more reason why we should do the right thing.

The judge at one point reminded Dunlop that he did not have the excuse of being a drug addict by which he meant that Dunlop was an educated , cultured man who was well aware of the full implications of his actions both legal and moral. He also made the point that there was no such thing as a victimless crime. The state had been damaged …..even if we could not put an exact cash cost on that damage. In these times of economic uncertainty the need for integrity in public affairs is even greater than ever and the sentence the man got reflected this.

Cardinal Brady would have us all believe that he is sorry and ashamed by the report of child physical and  sexual abuse but why should we believe him?. The Sisters of Charity have said much the same thing. The truth is of course that there is no objective reason why any of these people should even be listened to much less believed. The Sisters of Charity trained hundreds of girls to work in laundries. My wife was one of those girls. While doing this they treated the children of the rich in a very different manner. So did the entire Catholic Church. This was an act of FREE WILL by these people. No one put a gun to their heads. Both of these organisation , along with all the others refused in various degrees to help the enquiry into abuse. This was another act of FREE WILL. The Catholic Church fought long and hard to suppress reports of this kind at every stage. ‘Another act of FREE WILL. So let me repeat myself and say that there is no objective reason to believe these people. None.

The media covered up this abuse for decades and continue to do so. The ISPCC were in the front line of the abuse. The Catholic Church actually carried out the abuse. The state were the ones who facilitated the abuse . And these are the ones who control any debate in the wake of this report. The Bishops and Archbishops of Ireland will not go to jail. The Sisters of Charity who forced my wife to work in a laundry will not go to jail. Nothing will happen. Nothing. But if you or I dare suggest that immigration is not the path this country should be taking we will be condemned as racist. There will be no holding back there. There will be a rush , an indecent rush to condemn……

The media are quick to judge anyone who does not embrace the ideology of the European Corporate State as either stupid or racist and they are just as quick to repel any attack on the child abusing Catholic Church. This is not surprising as we have all seen how quick they were to support Cathal O’Searcaigh.  The media are eager to give a voice to the victims but only up to a point. If the victim demands the head of Brady or Stanislaus Kennedy he will be given short shift.

Christian Brothers murdered and raped children. Nuns of the Sisters of Charity murdered and raped children. This is now a matter of record. The Catholic Church has consistently done everything in it’s power to frustrate the victims in their search for justice. This is also a matter of public record. Men who achieve the position of Cardinal or Bishop or Archbishop in the Catholic Church are not fools. They are highly intelligent and as such would of course have been very well aware of the horror going on all around them. Cardinal Brady is a criminal liar but he won’t go to jail.

The Jesuits are already peddling the pro Brady propaganda. No doubt they would also deny that S. Kennedy was involved in spite of the fact that hundreds have made allegations against her. Fergus O’Donoghue S.J. seems to have forgotten that the Pope himself knew what was going on …To suggest that this man knew nothing is to label him a blind incompetent fool but like I say fools are not elected as Cardinals. There is nothing new in the argument O’Donoghue puts forward to protect Brady. We have heard the exact same lies over and over again. This is also well documented. No matter how people try to square the circle the simple fact is that the Nazi argument ( we didn’t know ) just does not wash. It didn’t hold up at the Nurenberg Trials and does not hold up today …..The abuse and the allegations of abuse had been going on for decades. Nazi war criminals claimed they knew nothing and if we must accept Brady’s word then for the sake of consistency and natural justice we must accept the word of the war criminals. There was  ,after all , little if any actual proof that people like Albert Speer knew anything. Children were raped and murdered. The dogs in the street knew what the Sisters of Charity were up to. ….The Nazi argument is just not credible no matter how often a Jesuit might shout it out.

Hitler did many good things for Germany but this does not take away from his guilt. Brady may or may not have done good but this does not take away from his guilt. Brady may not have personally murdered anyone but neither did Speer or Hitler for that matter. There are those who claim that even Hitler knew nothing. If the economic and social norms of the 50′s , 60′s and 70′s still prevailed in Ireland today , if the Church still had the iron control it had then these rapes and murders would still be going on. The only reason any of this is in the public domain now is because of economics. If it was not for the fact that many victim now have economic power ( and the political power that goes with it ) none of this would ever  have been officially acknowledged …..If the victims were powerless as they were in the past it would all still be going on. Without the threat of court action not a penny in compensation would ever have been paid. This is also a matter of record.

Children were murdered and raped. Lives were destroyed. And the lie of the good Cardinal , Bishop , Archbishop or Mother Superior is still being peddled. And we have heard this argument over and over and over. Bishops and Arch Bishop have blatantly lied and been caught out in their lies yet the lie is still propagated. Brady knew what was going on because the victims had told him. They told him and they told me. The only difference is that I accepted what the victims said and Brady didn’t ( until he had to ). For decade after decade the victims had been screaming to high heaven of what was going on. The allegation had been going on for 50 years. Brady knew. And those who praise him know that he knew. The Jesuit knew also. Fergus O’Donogue knew. He’s an educated man. He can read the papers. He , I’m sure listens to the radio news. He must have been aware of the endless allegations. He is happy to take the word of Cardinal Brady so why did he not accept the word , the constant repeated word of the victims? And why did he join this branch of the Church when he knew what the Church was doing ? He is I’m quite certain aware of the constant allegations made against Stanislaus Kennedy. I have made them along with many others and will continue to do so untill my dying day. When are the Jesuits going to accept the words of Kennedy’s victims? My wife and children were her victims as were many others.
Will the Jesuits and all the rest condemn Stanislaus Kennedy. The victims (her victims ) have spoken out again and again ….Will the Jesuits accept my word, the word of my wife, the word of my daugher ? Over and over the victims of Kennedy have demanded justice……and the response of the Church and State is to call the victims liars. This is also on public record.  How much proof is needed. Just how many dead children do you need before you accept the truth ? Why is the word of Brady to be accepted as fact and the word of my wife declared to be a lie ? Why do the Jesuits accept the word of Brady and not accept the word of the hundreds of victims of Kennedy ?

The Church , in which this man prospered , was involved in criminal activity  on a mind boggling scale. It was these same criminals who made Brady a cardinal. These same people had more than once tried to imply that the victims of sexual abuse were perhaps not as innocent as they claimed to be….There is no objective reason to accept the word of Cardinal Brady and a host of very good reasons for at least questioning  it. But the Jesuit cannot acknowledge the facts because if Brady is a criminal then what of the Jesuits. The Church has never been slow to question the word of the victims. So why is it so fast to accept the allegation by Brady that he knew nothing? Because Brady’s claim of ‘sorrow’ is no more than an allegation. The allegations of a Cardinal it seems are to be accepted at face value but not the allegations of the victims. Fergus O’Donohue has removed ( censored ) all comments I have made from his blog. Comments which I, on behalf of victims left there have been removed. He doesn’t like the truth and is quick to censor it. No doubt he would claim the Brady is entitled to his ‘good name’. All men are not equal in O’Donohue’s  eyes. A Cardinals word has value but not the word of the victim. A Cardinal’s word is to be respected but the word of the victim is an ‘allegation’. Cardinal Brady knew what was going on. But Hitler’s was right – if you repeat a lie often enough  you can persuade people to believe anything.
The Catholic Church is a powerful organisation ( an empire ) that has perverted the message of  Jesus Christ for 2,000 years. In it’s mission to save the  poor from sin ( sexual sin for the most part ) it has destroyed the lives of hundreds of millions of men , women and children. After the last great slaughter (the Holocaust ) it was they who did all in their power to facilitate the escape of Adolf  Eichmann and the rest of the Nazi murderers. The depravity of this church is without limit. Hitler had a high opinion of the Jesuit Order and claimed to have used the same template to build the Nazi Party. It was the Jesuits who said , “Give me the child and I’ll show you the man”. They understand only too well how power can be used and abused.

Jesuits like O’Donohue and Cardinals such as Brady are responsibe for the abuse just as surely as if they had done the deeds themselves. It could never have happened on the scale it did without their active support. And to continue to support the myth of the Cardinals or Bishops who knew nothing is to ensure that it will happy again.

note: since posting this my comments on the Jesuit’s blog have been reinstated….like God , he moves in mysterious ways……

For decades the ISPCC was involved in the wholesale abuse of children in Ireland. The Cruelty Man was the ISPCC man who decided who would and would not end up in care. He did it for money. He was paid to do it. He’s still doing it today. The ISPCC , The Irish Christian Brothers , the Catholic Church , the Sisters of Charity and the state were all involved in this. Stanislaus Kennedy was also involved. Kennedy not only is not now in jail but has been elevated to the position of Member of the Council of State. In fact no one of any significance has been sent to jail.

The report on abuse in Ireland just published is a sham. It does not name those who are  guilty. Not only does the report not mention the  names of  the guilty but it was in fact  edited (censored) by those same guilty people. Victims of  this church/state abuse were today locked out of the press conference  called to launch the report. The Catholic Church still control the national school system in Ireland. They control much of the services for the homeless and vulnerable in Ireland. None of the abuse was carried on against children. The abuse was carried on against poor children. The church treated the children of the rich and the middle class in quite a different manner.

Anyone who claims that the ISPCC today is a different organisation is missing the point. The ISPCC , the Sisters of Charity , Stanislaus Kennedy , Christian Brothers etc etc would all like to move on …….what they don’t want is for one of their own to go to  jail. And none of these people  will in fact  go to jail. To date not one single person in a senior position in any of these organisations has gone to jail. The report is as I’ve said a sham. We knew all these things before the report. We’ve known all about the business of abuse for years. The ‘dogs in the street’ and all that……

The media has played a large part in all of this.  For decades they refused to report the facts. They continue to this day to refuse to report the facts.  For years victims of abuse have accused Stanisluas Kennedy and others of being involved but anyone who tries to say this on air is soon shut up. On the other hand a bishop who quite openly perverts the course of justice is treated like an honored and indeed honorable guest on every other talk show. We are told that it’s all quite different now  and that there are laws to protect children. But as I have already stated children are not and never have been at risk. It’s poor children who need protection. Give every poor person , child or adult the service of a good barrister and just about all social ills would vanish overnight. It’s as simple as that. It always has been just as simple as that. The ONLY reason that children in care were abused is because they (and their parents)  had no power or were perceived as having no power…..Lets be brutally honest here. The rich are not called the beautiful people for nothing and the same applies to their children. A good diet , a healthy self image etc etc can have a dramatic effect on the physical appearance of a person….the beautiful people do indeed often have beautiful children but they don’t get abused by Christian Brothers……..

It’s all about money and power and the poor had neither. That’s what it’s all about. That , and nothing else. It was the poor who today were refused entry to the press conference. It was the poor who were abused. European Human Rights law does not protect the poor. In spite of the obvious fact that the poor are the single biggest minority group in any society there is no provision in law to protect them against discrimination. Discrimination against the poor is historically the oldest and most common form of discrimination. Poor children were abused. Not just in their hundreds but in their thousands. It was the poor and not the middle class who suffered. Children in private catholic schools were not abused. Nuns , Christian Brothers and such people made a deliberate conscious choice to give the middle class or wealthy child the best education possible but they had something else in mind for the child that was poor. They knew what they were doing. They knew only too well.  8 or 10 years in the hands of such people and most girls were fit  only for the laundry or the streets and that’s where most ended up. Talk to any young girl selling her body on the streets of Dublin and there is a good chance her mother or grand mother was in the ‘care’ of these people.

At a fundamental level this report changes nothing. The ISPCC refused to hand over information requested by the inquiry. The ISPCC have shown the same contempt for the victims as the Christian Brothers have.  They are complicit in the abuse.  But they will not go to jail for trying to frustrate the justice system. No , nothing has changed. The abusers are still running the show.

While listening to Internet radio I came across this story from Chicago about a woman who left her four year old child in a car while she went looking for sex. The story is not important in itself and to be honest I don’t know why it was reported in the first place. WBBM is a serious talk station so I suppose this is offered as a kind of light entertainment. One of the other main stories being run on the station is the one about the Craigslist Killer.

Radio , radio – I heard it on the radio.

It seems that Ian Brady has now been deprived of one of his few pleasures. I would have thought that those who are being held in custody , be it in prison or hospital would be exempt from the no smoking rule but it seems that I was wrong.
Regardless of ones opinion of Brady this seems little short of cruelty…..Is this some new way of fighting mental illness..and depression etc…? One can understand the fact that he has to do without his German wine but this is just…….petty….

I have written quite a bit in the last couple of weeks about Cathal O’Searcaigh and the movie , ”Fairytale of Kathmandu“. I have not seen the film and to be honest I have no interest in seeing it. O’Searcaigh is not important to me , nor are the opinions of those who choose to justify him in their various and pathetic ways. So this is my final word on the matter , for what it’s worth….

On Wednesday morning last I got up and had my two cups of coffee , flicked on my laptop and checked my emails.  I had my little Sony radio sitting beside the laptop and , as is my habit , I switched it on without any real intention of listening to it…..I like a little ‘background noise’  , I’m one of those people who cannot concentrate without something at least murmuring in the background. The Tubridy Show was on and he , Brian Tubridy was talking to the Irish screen writer Mark O’Halloran but I wasn’t really paying much attention….at least that is , not to begin with.

O’Halloran had been involved in the Irish movie , “ Adam and Paul“, I think he may have acted in it but I have not seen the movie , he may have also written the script , I’m really not sure. The film is about two drug addicts . It’s a ‘day in the life ‘ kind of thing and we are invited to watch as they wander around the streets of Dublin looking for their next fix……It’s a comedy…… Before making the movie O’Halloran had followed drug addicts ( Junkies , as he called them) around the streets and he found it all a great laugh… We know this because he tells us so and he was having a good laugh while recounting the story.

He told a story about two young women , obviously stoned out of their minds , in the middle of O’Connell Street fighting over a choc-ice. He mimicked their voices ……he laughed as he recounted how these women (we can imagine them ) fought in the street like two zombies…..and this was just one of his stories…. He had lots of them , he went to great pains to explain to us how you could have great fun following human derelicts on the streets of Dublin… For , what seemed to me like an eternity , this man laughed and invited us to laugh at the spectacle of those ghost like figures we see wandering the streets of our capital city…..He went on and on ……while still laughing he told us about the young man trying to hold a cigarette in his hand while a needle was hanging from his hand at the same time…..and he laughed and laughed yet again. It was relentless….I sat in my room horrified and sickened hardly believing what I was hearing…..and still it went on …..and on… At one point there was a reference to Beckett and the absurd….but that didn’t diminish the horror of what I was hearing…..

  - And O’Searcaigh ? …People keep referring to the fact that he did not feel that he was actually doing anything wrong. …How he was , in his own way , rather innocent….even vulnerable. They wonder why he seemed only too willing to hang himself in front of the camera……We all know the story by now.

But the truth of all of this is really quite simple. O’Searcaigh , like O’Halloran is a moral degenerate. These men  have no moral compass to guide them. They are not even aware of the sin they commit. They are , in their own way , truly innocent….but in the wrong way….They do not understand , indeed are incapable of understanding that it is wrong , yes wrong to laugh at , or exploit those who are less fortunate than ourselves. And those who feel the need to say we must not judge in this way (they’ll judges us as ‘racist’ or ‘homophobic’ at the drop of a hat themselves) are no less morally compromised.  These media hacks , the paid minions of their media bosses attempt to impose a new morality. Far from being independent they are the lumpen proletaritat in the service of  the New European Corporate State.  Their morality is ‘modern’ and , when necessary , flexible…….and you need a new morality when trying to justify the ‘free movement of labour’ itself the harbinger of the New European Corporate StateThese , the paid servants of their press baron bosses warn of the dangers of racism while our most fundamental rights are being negated by the day…..without as much as a whisper from them. The right to strike abolished for all practical purposes as is the right to free speech….the homeless litter the streets , the sick and aged are treated with contempt , Ireland becomes an economy in place of a country and they have nothing to say…….nothing that is apart from the stock phrases , ‘HOMOPHOBIC’ and ‘RACIST’………….and like O’Searcaight and O’Halloran they are well paid…….and they know how to get an Arts Council grant….in the past we had a name for people like this ……They are the New Ireland……and they have the confidence (arrogance) that goes with new wealth……alongside their masters they have their heads in the trough and are feeding with a frenzy…..

As I said many times , O’Searcaigh is not the real issue and never was. The real issue is both simple and complex at the same time and has to do with the society we inhabit. It has to do with our values , our morality if you want to call it that. But it also has a lot to do with power and how it is exercised. It has to do with a new morality for a New Ireland and how to sell that morality……

The moral relativism of O’Searcaigh did not come from nowhere. He , and the many , the very many who stand by him are a product of the society they live in. Our education system educated these people. And none of this is an accident. It hasn’t just happened. There is , as indeed  there always is , a very real logic behind all of this……there is an inevitability about it all….

………..’and we have seen it all before. We’ve seen how , in Hitler’s Germany , millions of good decent people voted into power one of the most evil men in history……and we have asked ourselves how these people could not only let it happen but be willing participants in the affair…and even while we ponder the question our poor , sick and vulnerable lie for days in hospital corridors….with every passing minute our society becomes more uncaring….the rich get even richer while the poor are marginalised…..there is a new brutality in the air…..we have become selfish…..We have become both liberal and intolerant at the same time… we are , if we but knew if , the new barbarians…

No , O’Searcaigh is not important….and his poetry even less so. He is the product of a new Ireland but more importantly the product of  a new Europe…..Had he been born twenty years earlier he might have been a Christian Brother. O’Halloran will continue with his movie career….no one will condemn him , no one will point to the obscene racism behind his warped sense of humour…..The journalists of Ireland will continue to prostitute themselves in the pursuit of advancement in their trade…..Tubridy will , no doubt , continue with his radio programme……he will  I imagine ,warn us of the danger of racism from time to time…..and he’ll be well paid for it too…

…………………and the landlords of Ireland will smile……..

”Sure isn’t it a great little country”.

Should Cathal O’Searcaigh’s books be banned ? This is a question that has been raised since the debate began on O’Searcaigh’s activities in Nepal. But I have not heard anyone suggest that books should be in fact be banned at all , rather this is a point made by those who are intent on not facing the issue of O’Searcaigh’s books being on the national curriculum. Let’s be very clear about this , no one has advocated that books should be banned (or burned ). There is no mob howling in the street. There is no witch-hunt but there is a serious question to be asked.
Those who say no to this have two principle arguments. The first I have already dealt with so this leaves us with what seems to be their only real point. They say , “But what about Wilde , Lorca and all the others , are we to get rid of them all “? Now let me repeat what I’ve said before. No one is advocating that O’Searcaigh’s books be ‘got rid of’. We pick and choose who we put on the curriculum , people are put on and taken off all the time. When we remove one poet to make room for another does it mean we are denying the merit of the work ? So there is nothing wrong in principle , there is no fundamental principle at stake here. But many would declare , “Hold on a minute , this mans work may be taken off because of his private life and that’s a different matter , there is most certainly a principle involved ” The answer to that is that O’Searcaigh is in trouble not for his private life but his public actions. And we censor people every day of the week for their actions and not always by taking them to court. We reserve that right and exercise it with regularity. So that’s not the real argument either , so what is ?
It’s very simple , “we must look at the work (poems) and not the man”. The poetry stands on it own. All this is fine but we must go beyond soundbites regardless of whose they are or what purpose they serve. When we place the work of a living poet on the curriculum we honor him (the fact that it may not be our intention to do so is neither here nor there ). And we can shout all we like that it’s all to do with the work , we can declare it from the mountain tops but we cannot alter that fact. Indeed the accusation that we have at times been motivated by a desire to honor someone whose work does not in fact merit it has been made many times.  But what then about all those other poets ? What about the dead poets , does it make a difference if a poet is dead or alive ? …….I can hear the laughter , even as I write this I can almost see the smiling faces ……but let’s stop here a moment and consider the matter. Does it in fact make a difference ?
We honor our heroes (and poets ) , the living and the dead . But the dead are distant , and we see them at a distance and with the benefit of history and hindsight. But what of the living ? Our living poets and heroes are much closer. Should O’Searcaigh be able to teach his poetry in the class room ? Would it be alright if he were a teacher ? Would a man who is involved in sex tourism be acceptable as a teacher ? Be honest , and if not why not. We demand a standard in private and public behaviour from our teachers and others who’s duty it is to educate the young , we may say that the mans private life is his own business but that’s not and never has been strictly true. Should the teacher’s work (his ability to teach) not be our only consideration when we hire him? And the politician that we elect , what about him ? Do we separate the man from his work ? The answer is a simple no. Are we then just hypocrites or is there a reason for this apparent double standard ? Not everything can be reduced to law and statute. Our post moder liberal society has passed so many laws that we must (on pain of prison) be careful what we say. History ,what did or didn’t happy in the yesterday , is something to be decided on in a criminal court…..and all of this with the best of liberal intentions.  Those who are quick to proscribe even our spoken thoughts , our words , tell us now that we must do nothing……..The work must stand on it’s own…….what’s behind all this ?…….what indeed.
Where do these liberal idea’s come from ? The Art for Arts Sake movement has informed much of modern thinking but is little understood by many.  Art it say’s stands on it own (the thing in itself) and does not have a social function (in itself). But the fairytale , the story and the poem do have a social purpose. We may try to flatter ourselves that we , unlike the primitive artist can produce an abstract or private art , an art for it’s own sake but in aiming for self flattery we only fool ourselves. Art for Arts Sake , to be understood must be understood in the context of the philosophy and culture from which it arose and the culture it helped to shape. It was never intended as a end in itself. The Russian poet , Afanasy Fet was greatly influenced by the movement and wrote much of his poetry in the spirit of Art for Art’s Sake and those who wish to pursue the study of it might do well to study his poetry and philosophical writings.
Our words are , more often than not , are put in our mouths. We express opinions about liberty and rights which we believe to be our own but which  in fact we learned somewhere…..just as those who say , “The work must stand on it’s own”. We may think we are expressing an original idea but that does not make it so. A vulgar concept is made no less vulgar by  the fact that we are unaware of it’s vulgarity. And what passes for liberal though in much of today’s self proclaimed liberal society is the worst possible form of vulgarity. We demand a freedom for Art to express itself that we are not prepared to extend to our fellow man. We sell off our social housing stock , our homeless litter the streets , the old and infirm perform their bowel movement in hospital corridors , we encourage mass immigration (it’s good for the country/us) with little regard for those who pay the price. And we have an answer for everything. Homophobic , racist , art for art’s sake …..(be careful what you say)….a woman’s right to choose ( but not to say what she thinks). And all , we tell ourselves for the common good. Thousands of years of philosophy reduced to soundbites. …..
Even those who are critical of O’Searcaigh feel the need to regard him as a good man. No such urge was felt when Jackson and Glitter were being judged. We speak of his spiritual dimension …..and such things. We seem incapable of declaring him bad. And yet we judge others every day of the week and feel no need to explain ourselves. But does a good man exploit others as he has done ? If he were an ill educated brute , if he had grown up in an amoral criminal environment we would of course keep this in mind as we passed judgement. But O’Searcaigh is no brute. He’s had the benifit of a good education , he understand morals and ethics….his friends keep telling us of his fine mind. O’Searcaigh , over a period of time solicited money from fellow artists so that he might do what he was doing. This was no momentary lapse of reason…..And a man who willfully does such a wrong , who makes others uknowingly complicit in the wrong is he not a bad man? They have read Hamlet and not understood a single word. They weep at the last act …….OH HAMLET they sigh…..as some poor minion hauls yet another body off backstage. Their arrogance is boundless. They are quick to judge us while contorting themselves in an effort to avoid judging one of their own. Like rape , it’s to do with power more than sex. And they have the power. Might is right.
Dublin , a city once famous for it’s bookshops now has practically no bookshops left ….the more of a liberal education the general population gets the less inclined are they to read books. ….there’s a moral there for anyone who want’s to see it.

And so , back to the question I started with. Should O’Searcaigh’s books be removed from the curriculum? What do I think ? The truth is that I’m not sure….I really don’t know. But I believe that we should talk about it in an open manner. There is no black and white answer. There is no ‘one fit’s all solution’. There is nothing so dangerous as a society (or a mind ) ruled by certainties.  But in a society where freedom of speech is being chipped away at (for all the ‘right’ reasons )  we should not be surprised that some don’t even want to have a dialogue.
There is no such thing as a free dinner , or a free education or for that matter a free curriculum. Even the most liberal of art’s curriculum serves a purpose. We don’t learn art , philosophy or poetry we are taught it. We may think we are thinking in a free manner but this is rarely the case. We are happy with the free movement of labour and if we hear a contrary opinion we shout ‘RACISM’. Economic exploitation is justified even made into a virtue.  No deviation is permissible…. ( and all the while we grow a little richer ). All this requires an ethic and a philosophy to underpin it. And we have to believe it all , we have to believe that’s it’s we ( the reasonable man ) who is making the decisions and that those decisions are ’good’. We must convince ourselves that our values can ‘stand on their own’. That way , in time we don’t even feel the need to justify them. They are after  all self evident to any ‘reasonable man’. They are true in themselves. …….and so we pass laws restricting free speech and call it liberal , anything can be justified and is. Twenty years ago I was a liberal and have not changed in one single regard but the word liberal has changed. We change language and are not even aware of it. E. P. Thompson once said that before we kill people we must kill language. Before we kill a ’man’ he must become an ‘enemy’. Words have power. And so , a liberal state passes another yet law to protect the people from themselves. And it creates an Art and Poetry (that stands on it own)  to underpin this culture. The Academy speaks , and says what it was taught to say and thinks it has said something new. ……. No , nothing is black and white. Things are rarely as simple as they seem.
Going back to this idea that the art must stand on it’s own , it is interesting  to note that when scholars discuss this concept in it’s cultural and historical context they rarely if ever consider their OWN historical context. There is , if you like an assumption (prejudice) that they are writing the last page , making the definitive statement. We can see the fatal flaws that previous generations have made but not the ones that we are making. We are more than a little arrogant…And by a happy coincidence our philosophies , values  etc , the culture we create , just happens to work in our own interest. No one votes for high taxes “…..
Yes , yes , yes -” but we can’t go down the road of banning…” If you were to stop any man in the street right now and say ,”Should we take O’Searcaigh’s book off the curriculum ” the reply , I guarantee you , would be , “No we mustn’t ban his books”. This need , this almost atavistic compulsion to say no to banning in-spite of the fact that banning is not the issue is in itself revealing. There’s something going on here that has nothing to do with the argument in question. Their need is no different to the need that O’Searcaigh’s supporters displayed by rushing in to defend  him with such speed.  It’s a bit too insistent , too urgent…….it’s as if they are saying , ”I don’t want to think about this”.
As young people say today , “Let’s get real”. Merit has never , I repeat never been the only issue when it comes to who or what is on the curriculum.  From the foundation of the state people have had their work represented for almost every reason under the sun from their  percieved ‘patriotism’ right down to the ‘services they have given to society.

Just one final point. It’s strange , well it’s really not strange at all – the argument that merit alone should decide the issue forces me to point out that while O’Searcaigh’s poetry is no doubt popular I don’t think any serious critic would claim that he’s in the same league as Hartnett …this is no Melville or Joyce were talking about here. I defy anyone who’s read Hartnett’s poem , The Retreat of Ita Cagney“ to say that O’Searcaigh has come anywhere near to Hartnett. No doubt you will say , “But those who know about poetry say he’s a fine poet”. But there is self interest at work here. Much of the rushing to defend O’Searcaigh is  a matter of closing ranks. And the idea that the man in the street might decide the relevance (or worst still the value) of O’Searcaigh’s work is something that they are not prepared to tolerate. You must have noticed that when he (the man in the street) intimates that he has something to say the spectre of ‘mob rule’ (and by intimation) brute ignorance is raised. Substitute ”Immigrant” or better still ”Black’s” for  the man in the street and we all know that they would be screaming ‘Racism’. And it is of course a form of racism. It’s quite normal for such people to make racist assumptions and voice them as long as it is directed at the ‘man in the street’. And if a working class community expresses reservations about mass immigration the entire community is damned as ’Racist’. Of course when , as happens frequently now in the UK , an immigrant community expresses concerns about this mass immigration they get very confused and don’t know what to say either way. What , what for the love of God do any of these people know about poetry or any art form ? These are the ones who condemned Kavanagh to the wilderness for decades. Who for years would literally smirk if you mentioned his name. They gave Charlie Cullen the same cold shoulder for quarter of a century….would you like me to go on ? Do I have to spell it out? These are the ones who sneered when Charles Haughey commissioned a work by Seoirse Bodley and then critised ’the work’. One of Europe’s finest composers and they snickered and sneered . No effort there to separate the artist from the patron. No ”the work must stand on it’s own “that time. These are the people who dismissed Bernadette Greevy , who didn’t know whether to praise or laugh at O’Riada (they are still not sure / the verdict isn’t in )……..
…………That such people should have a say in the first place , that they should be the ones who decide what does or does not go on the national curriculum is nothing short of a travesty.
  ……

Ian Brady , the moors murderer is reported to have been storing up pills with a view to killing himself.  Suicide , we are told is what he has in mind but as this is the second time he has been found with these pills we have to wonder what it’s all about. After all , he must know from the last time that he could not hide such medicines for any long period of  time and besides he could have killed himself several time with the number he had stored in his room.
There are those who claim that it’s all about him looking for attention. That may be true but personally I doubt it’s quite as simple as that. But if that’s all that’s left to a person , if that the only public way they can in some way validate themselves then what’s so wrong about that ? And many would say let him rot in his own private hell , but torture , and that’s what his living death has become , is never justified. Ultimately we have a duty of care to everyone. And especially to those who we call our enemy. None of this is ‘liberal’ hogwash. Showing respect for another’s humanity does not weaken us in any way.
But Brady will die soon. We will see more hate headlines such as greeted the death of Myra Hindley. In time Brady will be forgotten as indeed we will be also. Nothing will have been achieved. No dead children will rise from the grave and no mother’s tears will be magically undone.

Writing about the issues raised by the movie , “Fairytale of Kathmandu” and the poet Cathal O’Searchaigh , Eoghan Harris in the Independent’s anyalsis page treats us to a few pearls of wisdom or what passes for wisdom  with those like Harris.
Speaking of the poet Maira Mhac an tSaoi’s comments on the Joe Duffy Show he refers to her “forensic tour de force ” !!  And what was her contribution to the debate ? Well  ,she suggested that O’Chainnin’s  had betrayed a friend and acted for mercenary reasons …You can read the whole thing yourself but that’s what it all comes down to.  Harris is obviously a man who is easily impressed.
He then goes on to tell us that Eamon Delaney has let the cat out of the bag about the Rape Crisis Centre and that …..wait for it …….(drum roll ) …the Rape Crisis Centre has a feminist agenda….  not only is this man easily impressed but he’s also a bit behind on what the dogs in the street have been yelping about for years.
Now in case you think I’m being unfair to Harris here’s that link again (LINK) and oh , by the way Mr. Harris did manage to overlook one thing that Maira Mhac an sTaoi said on the radio , ie that young oriental boys were not as sexually innocent as they might seem. (and we all know what she really means , don’t we ).  But if you feel that I might be misrepresenting her then just listen for yourself. RTE Liveline Podcasts .But the wonderful Harris is not a man to do things by half. In for a penny in for a pound. And so in true Irish fashion he drags up old history…….he opens his mouth but forgets to engage the grey matter first and thus comes out with this bit of insight …..(another drumroll ….)…
He tells us that Roger Casement ‘s reputation would have been ruined if a camera crew had been around in his day. He tells us that Casement had ’sordid’ sex with boys and then goes on to say that he (Casement ) went on to show dauntless courage fighting colonial power. Now it’s difficult to ruin someones reputation if they never had a good reputation in the first place. And perhaps Harris was a very stupid little boy and swallowed all the propaganda he was exposed  to in his childhood history classes but he should not assume that we were all as stupid as him. I can only speak for myself  but I cannot remember , even as a very young child , believing that Casement or Collins were anything more than thugs and psychopaths. True , the Christian Brother of Westland Row tried to convince me that these were Great Men but  I didn’t believe it then and certainly don’t believe it now. Now don’t get me wrong , I’m not saying that I was particularly clever or anything like that , it’s just that I never was a complete ’thick’. Casement’s  speech in the dock was a fine speech no doubt but he was talking about himself….and he’s not the first to use this world of ours as his own plaything …as a platform upon which to carve out his own destiny. History ,as we all know is written by the victor. …..and the fact that it was a Catholic school system that tried to impress upon us the virtues of Casement ( while beating , humiliating and abusing vulnerable children ) should be enough to make us wary of accepting THEIR heroes uncritically.
Unfortunatly people like Harris control the media and so dictate the level of debate. Have you notice how all these people keep referring to the fact that O’Searcaigh is a poet ? We all know he’s a poet so why do they keep mentioning it. Just last night on the radio I heard some media people refer to him almost as a tortured soul. You all know what I mean. Why this assumption of an almost spiritual nature to the man ?. Did anyone feel the need to ascribe these characteristics to Michael Jackson. No they didn’t , in spite of the fact that they both have presented themselves to the world in much the same manner. Jackson like O’Searcaigh is seen as ’naive’ almost childlike in his openness …even the body language is simular…and then there’s Garry Glitter. Has anyone tried to defend Glitter? Or look beyond the headlines to consider the man himself ? Or his predicament ?
When Eoghan Harris writes about O’Searcaigh he is of course really trying to tell us something about himself.  He is telling us to look at him. To take notice of the ‘liberal’ man who understands the issues. He has his own agenda and it’s quite transparent…. But like O’Searcaigh , he has misjudged the mood of the nation. He has also misjudged the intelligence of it’s people. …..

I have just found this quote from Pauline Bewick , one of O’Sharkey’s defenders , and well know artist. “ Rapists and paedophiles should be castrated “. She would no doubt say that O’Sharkey is none of these but the tone of this remark , the uncompromising nature of it is very different from that which she uses when speaking of O’Sharkey. This extreme right wing sentiment is in sharp contrast to her liberal attitude when speaking of exploitation in Nepal.
