Now that O’Searcaigh is back in the news I thought some might like to hear /see the man himself.

The body language , tone of voice it’s all too familiar. It sounds much the same as those statements from church leaders telling us that they knew nothing….We’ve seen a hundred Catholic priests and Christian brothers use that same tone…..Fairytales were used in the old days to warn children of dangers …….ironic isn’t it .

….mind you , if it were you or I it would be different….it would be very different.

For further posts on O’Searcaight you’ll find more here.

  1. [...] abusing Catholic Church. This is not surprising as we have all seen how quick they were to support Cathal O’Searcaigh.  The media are eager to give a voice to the victims but only up to a point. If the victim demands [...]

You are not comparing like with like. I fail to see how the media response to two completely separate issues can tell you anything new.

The Catholic Church Sex Abuse Scandals and the debate around sex tourism and western power in the East, are two completely different, complex, issues.

In fact, can i take this opportunity to highlight that this sort of carelessness in z-list journalism is what undermines the anti-o searcaigh arguments and exacberates intelligent debate.

I’ve said before that this man might well have been a Chritstian Brother if he had lived at a different time…he has the body language and denial down to a tee..
If O’Searcaigh had been a ‘common man’ he would have been treated in a totally different manner by the media…and if someone like the Communist Party had been running homes for poor children and done half of what has been happening they would with one voice have demanded it be banned and that it’s official be prosecuted.

The media response to the two is the same….an inability to call a spade a spade when ‘one of their own’ is in the frame.

o dear; there are a lot of ifs in that baseless tantrum.

Let me get this right; if O searcaigh had been born a Christian Brother, into a different era, and without notoriety, into a communist community that ran children’s homes, he would have been treated differently by the hypothetical media that existed at that time?? No shit Sherlock! (I think we have in you a real-life Jessica Fletcher on our hands here).

What you are trying to do here, is to lob all the objects of your frustration into one dubious category and find a common moral denominator in the media. This is neither useful nor clever.. in fact it’s pointless.

Clerical abuse of children and adult sex tourism are two completely different issues that require a sophistcated degree of knowledge to untangle. (Knowledge might I add, that you are clearly don’t have).

Its stinks of a really unflattering ‘them and us’ mentality and is probably born out of insecurity and frustration? Its the proverbial unflattering chip-on-the-shoulder.

A poet writes poetry, a priest teaches religion.. how can they possibly be lobbed in together with the general media and called ‘their own’. What do you mean by that?

Additionally, it is narrow-minded and not very ‘post-modern’ to assume that the media influence or generate any morality in or for the people.

In fact, there is a strong academic argument.. including a whole culture of reality TV, that strongly suggests that all the media is actually doing, is reflecting back to us… Consider that.

wowwwwww that is serious food for thought! D

  6. Niall Gordan Says:

No, this film extract shows only the body language of a man who is totally surprised by the allegations and the false “poor Nessa” portrayal of an ambitious and scheming liar!

For a more balanced and truthful account, I would recommend all those capable to go to the Beo.ie interview with the poet.

Cathal O’ is having a homecoming tonight in Gortahork…’Back by popular demand’ the posters trumpet..He will be reading excerpts from his memoirs of childhood..in English of course..
What childhood memories will the young boys of Nepal be left with after an encounter with ‘old man wisdom’ himself..
Shame on the people of Gortahork.

  8. has he been charged with abusing minors in thailand yet? there has been nothing repoted in the news for a while i hope he is convicted of taking advantage of minors

    • Gerry Says:

First point; The “author” of this site has no interest in O’Searcaigh? Methinks someone protesteth far too much…then again I could be wrong, not interested, but totally pre-occupied is probably more accurate.

      Second point; Controversy? What controversy? I don’t believe e-v-e-r-y-t-h-i-n-g I read/see – do you?

And for a very good reason. Journalists lie for a living – I should know, I am one. Really good film editors can say anything they want; I know – I have.

Don’t be so bloody stupid you people…and get on your moral highhorses. You can twitter and tweet all you like, but its shite if if its not right.

I will recant when your accused is found guilty, and will only add that I write now because I find this whole issue so bloody pathetic until substantiated.
