Ian Brady Moors Murder Yet Another Suicide Bid

February 12, 2008

Ian Brady , the moors murderer is reported to have been storing up pills with a view to killing himself.  Suicide , we are told is what he has in mind but as this is the second time he has been found with these pills we have to wonder what it’s all about. After all , he must know from the last time that he could not hide such medicines for any long period of  time and besides he could have killed himself several time with the number he had stored in his room.
There are those who claim that it’s all about him looking for attention. That may be true but personally I doubt it’s quite as simple as that. But if that’s all that’s left to a person , if that the only public way they can in some way validate themselves then what’s so wrong about that ? And many would say let him rot in his own private hell , but torture , and that’s what his living death has become , is never justified. Ultimately we have a duty of care to everyone. And especially to those who we call our enemy. None of this is ‘liberal’ hogwash. Showing respect for another’s humanity does not weaken us in any way.
But Brady will die soon. We will see more hate headlines such as greeted the death of Myra Hindley. In time Brady will be forgotten as indeed we will be also. Nothing will have been achieved. No dead children will rise from the grave and no mother’s tears will be magically undone.

In whole hearted agreement with you.

You’re quite right. There’s a strange irony in the fact that while many at the time of his sentence were outraged & felt that the death penalty should have been reintroduced,it is now Brady himself who probably wishes it had been. As for the tabloid headlines – who’s the more evil? The sick, screwed-up individuals who comitted these terrible crimes or the self-righteously indignant who have profited from trawling through them for the past forty years?

Thank you AH and Aoife ,

Unfortunatly most people want no more than to see the man suffer – and have you noticed that when it’s a sex crime people get very excited? It’s often struck me that there is something disturbing behind the too loud condemnation we hear….it’s a bit too loud and too agressive to be heathy….

    I have indeed.

I have also notice that any other reaction to such crimes is unacceptable as far as most are concerned. I may very well agree that a said crime is a terrible and horrific thing to have happend, but it does not bring about the desire in me to shout insults at the television, or to air my rage on the evening news, or to protest in favour of reinstating the death penalty.

I often wonder if people are so unecessarily vocal in their show of distate, because internally their reaction was far less violent…and this worries them, it’s not socially acceptable to feel anything less than utter disgust…why wouldn’t you feel the need to shout in unison “hang’em” “let’em rot” “monster”…? That’s how you should feel…isn’t it?

Many mask their fascination in protest…in over the fence gossip with the neighbours…in obsessive watching of every news broadcast and newspaper artical; legitimately exploring their own understanding of what has occured…their own personal attraction to the darker side of human nature.

Speaking of the headlines, I remember when Hindley died one newspaper had as its front page headline, presented as fact, the statement: HINDLEY IN HELL. (“Evil Myra Hindley is in Hell today following her…”) My god, it would take a lot for me to side with a multiple murderer but they brought me damn close.
